How the moon relates to the sea

The gravitational pull of the moon and sun affects tides. Around new and full moons, the difference between high and low tide is generally larger. Around first and last quarters, that difference is generally smaller.

This describes a general tidal pattern. To find heights and times, you need information for your location and date; the moon phase alone does not provide them.

Does a new moon mean good fishing?

Do not treat it as a guarantee. Some anglers use lunar calendars to choose when to try a trip, but a “good day” label cannot guarantee fish or suitable boating conditions.

In Costa, distinguish the phase shown from the conditions for the day. The recommendations in the moon section consider the available forecast; they are not a success percentage or a promise of a catch.

How to check the moon in Costa

Times are shown in the destination’s local time. If you visit another coast, change the location before comparing. The moon image represents its phase; it is not a live camera.

• Open Explore and choose the destination or location for your trip.
• Find the moon section and open “View lunar calendar”.
• Select a day to see the phase, illuminated portion, and available times.
• In “Plan”, check times and tips alongside the forecast.

Compare two days before deciding

If you can go on Saturday or Sunday, check both dates in the calendar, then compare wind and waves. A moon phase you prefer does not outweigh a bad-weather advisory.

Keep your own notes: location, time, conditions, and outcome. Over time, you can compare your experiences without attributing every catch only to the moon.
